MindTree - A People Perspective

Today I read an interesting article about the growth of MindTree through Cultural Diversity. It sounds a bit awkward at the first place but a deeper thought into the article gave me some insights that I would like to share here.

By cultural diversity the first thing that comes into one’s mind is the nationality, but this is one of the ways in which there can be cultural diversity between two entities. The Case reads as '90% Growth through Cultural Diversity', the actual meaning of this phrase lies in the fact that the organization was initiated by a group of people who were highly successful in their respective domain areas but were very different from each other in many aspects of their respective personalities. The founding team consisted of members, each being from a different organization and that brings with it different work habits and environments. The members came from a diverse educational backgrounds and professional competences. This seems to be an ideal stage for differences to prevail. However, this also presents the opportunity to co-existence with the best practices prevalent so far. This gave MindTree a competitive advantage of ability of provide the best of all worlds.

As the organization grew, the culture prevalent had to be internalized among the employees so that each of them are at a common platform. This was the reason for the creation of the DNA of the MindTree i.e. Imagination, Action, Joy. The DNA of the company is also reflected by the logo of the company, which has history behind it altogether. The logo consists of the three colours of red, blue and yellow. The red background represents action and the emphasis on the work done, the Blue upward stroke represents the uninterrupted imagination of the minds that foster creativity and innovation, and finally the yellow bubbles represent the moments of joy and happiness prevalent in the organization at all times. The amount of thought that has been put into this process speaks volumes of the seriousness with which the people's perspective is treated at MindTree.

Another point that is worth a mention is the emphasis given to Integrity within the organization. Being a former MindTree mind, I am aware that each new employee is given the White Book of Integrity written by the Chairman of the organization. It helps each employee to have a set level of expectation in terms of honesty and consistency expected out of each of them. It helps create a value system that percolates undiluted across all levels of the organization.

One of the differentiating factors of MindTree is that it is one of the very few organization for whom societal and profit motive are a simultaneous activity. Most successful organizations today have a societal initiative, but the question is how many of them started with the social initiative and succeeded with it along with rising margins. That where MindTree stands out!!

This blog has been created as a mode to reflect upon the learnings gained from the people aspect of things.

I will try to document as much as I can in this context and bring forth any insights or observations I feel to be significant.

Looking forward to ideas.... :)
